About Citizenship

Importance of Citizenship / Benefits to Becoming a U.S. Citizen

1. Right to Vote

The right to elect leaders whom you believe could best govern your community is one of the more incredible benefits of becoming a citizen.  It is one of the most significant rights bestowed on U.S. citizens.  By becoming a citizen you will gain the right to participate in the democratic process.

2. Petition for Family Members

When petitioning to bring family members to the U.S., citizens generally get priority.  Being a citizen will also allow you to petition for other kinds of family members that you would not be able to petition for otherwise (e.g., parents, siblings, adult children).

3. Employment at Federal Institutions

There are some jobs, particularly federal jobs that are only open to U.S. citizens.  Once you gain citizenship, these employment opportunities and the chance to work in government are available to you.

4. Travel more freely

Without citizenship, green card holders are limited on how long they can be out of the country.  As a citizen, you will also be able to seek help and protection from the U.S. Embassies while abroad. 5. Obtain Citizenship for your Children

As a U.S. citizen, your children can automatically become citizens once you have naturalized.  If your children are born abroad, your citizenship status will automatically make them citizen.

6. Eligibility for Federal Grants and Scholarships

When you become a citizen, you will become eligible for specific federal grants or scholarships that are otherwise unavailable.
