We provide essential support to new immigrants and asylum seekers, organize service initiatives and donation drives, and lead voter registration, education, and engagement efforts that empower individuals to participate fully in our democracy. One Family, Two Paths to the Ballot

One family, two paths to civic engagement – and two new opportunities to participate in American democracy!

Sometimes, a single household participates in both of our programs at once — and we love seeing that impact firsthand!

Our students are some of our best advocates. They share what they learn about citizenship and voter registration with friends and family, helping make civic participation more accessible to everyone who is eligible.

Imagine a parent preparing for the U.S. citizenship interview while their teenage son or daughter takes the first steps toward registering to vote. Both are building a path toward fuller participation in American civic life, even though their journeys look different.

For parents: Preparing for naturalization is the first step. Once they become U.S. citizens, they can register to vote if they meet the eligibility requirements.
For teens: Eligible 16- and 17-year-olds in New York can preregister to vote now, without waiting for a parent or guardian to complete the naturalization process.

At 1 Citizen at a Time, we believe civic engagement starts with individuals but can grow through entire families and communities. We bring citizenship education and voter engagement together to help people take their next steps.
