10 Step Guide to the US Citizenship Application Process
There are many steps that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen. It can be pretty easy to get confused about how to begin the naturalization process, so here’s a guide!
1. Check if you are eligible to begin naturalizing
There are specific requirement you must meet before starting the process. The most basic requirement you must meet is:
- You are at least 18 years of age at the time of filing (except active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces);
- You are a permanent resident of the United States for a required period of time;
- You have lived within the state or USCIS district where you claim residence for at least 3 months prior to filing;
- You have demonstrated physical presence within the United States for a required period of time;
- You have demonstrated continuous residence for a required period of time;
- You demonstrate good moral character;
- You demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution;
- You demonstrate a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government (also known as “civics”) as well as an ability to read, write, speak and understand basic English; and
- You take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Some applicants may be eligible for a modified oath
2. Go to your Biometrics Appointment
To conduct background checks, USCIS may require applicants to be fingerprinted and photographed. USCIS will notify you if a biometric appointment is needed
3. Complete and Pass the Interview
- Once you have completed all previous steps, USCIS will contact you to schedule a date for your interview
- Arrive at the USCIS at the date and time of your appointment
- Try not to miss your scheduled appointment; this could lead to you waiting several months to have it rescheduled
